Description

The Temple of Athena Nike (Victory) sits on a large bastion at the southwest corner of the Propylaea. Archaeologists took the temple and bastion apart and found within the remains of an older temple dating to the 6th Century BCE that had been demolished by the Persians in 480 BCE. The new temple was constructed between 449 and 420 BCE. The Turks took the temple down in 1686 and used the stones to build a fortification. In 1836, the stones were gathered and used to crudely reassemble the temple. The present restoration was completed in 2010.
